ATEX: what is it and what are the risks?

The term ‘explosive atmosphere’ means «atmosfera esplosiva» a mixture of dangerous substances with air, under atmospheric conditions, in the form of gases, vapours, mist or dust in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture.

It’s necessary that:

  • where explosive atmospheres may develop in such quantities as to endanger the safety and health of workers or others, the environments are structured in such a way as to enable the work to be carried out safely;
  • where explosive atmospheres may develop, adequate control during the presence of workers is ensured by the use of appropriate technical means.

What are the necessary requirements to be able to operate in environments where there are explosive atmospheres?
  • Develop the Classification of Areas at Risk of Explosion
  • Identify prevention and protection measures
  • Draft specific Document on explosion protection
  • Carry out information and training activities for all staff
  • Verify the suitability of installations in classified areas
To carry out a complete explosion risk assessment, remember to:
  • Carry out a specific hazard identification analysis from which an adequate risk assessment must result
  • Identify the characteristics of the plant, the substances used, the processes and possible interactions
  • Recognize any Emission Sources and Trigger Sources
  • Identify influential environmental conditions
